What is Tarot? Tarot is a form of divination going back at least 500 years, and probably much more. The true origination of Tarot is unknown, but it is thought to have been used in ancient Egyptian times, in France and Italy, and later in Western Europe and the British Isles. Through the use of an illustrated deck of cards laid out in a spread, oracles (also called diviners, wise ones, medicine men/women, shamans, gypsies, witches, readers, psychics, etc.,) were consulted on a wide range of issues. People wanted help in determining best times for sowing and reaping of crops, for questions about interpersonal relationships (when or whether to marry, etc.), and insight into their futures.
There are many, many different Tarot decks in existence today. An oracle will choose one or more decks to work with, usually based on how the deck "feels", psychically speaking, and how well the energy of the deck/oracle/client connect during readings. Though I own several styles of Tarot cards, I typically use three or four different decks over the course of a reading. A "spread" is the term used for how the cards are laid out. There are hundreds of spreads. As with Tarot card decks, a reader will usually choose one or two spreads with which to work on a regular basis. With most spreads, each card's position has a specific meaning, and often there is a direct connection between cards, one having an effect upon another. A great deal of effort and energy goes into your reading, and integrity is an important factor in my work. Your reading is as confidential as a session should be between a professional counselor and client. Tarot should not be considered as a replacement for professional psychotherapy when such therapy is needed. It is inappropriate for an oracle/reader to diagnose and treat mental illnesses.
